ARTT-130 Play Analysis:Dramaturgy

This introductory course explores ways of reading and analyzing plays in the context of production and understanding plays as texts for (and from) performance. By focusing on structural analysis and performance-centered criticism of diverse plays in context, this class engages students in dramaturgy. This concentration of the class focuses on works by contemporary African-American artists including Suzan-Lori Parks, August Wilson, Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, Adrienne Kennedy and Urban Bush Women. Intended for students from varied departments, this class introduces students to the guiding methodologies of the discipline of Theater, providing the tools for compelling decisions for criticism as well as for performance, direction and design.
Fulfills the Humanities & Writing II requirement.
