BIOL-009 Biology of Drugs and People

BIOL-009 Biology of Drugs and People

  • This course will primarily focus on the biology of drugs and people with some attention to the political, economic, and environmental factors associated with drug development. We will use pharmaceutical, over the counter, and street drugs to explore how drugs come to be and how they work. Sources for class readings will range from primary scientific research to popular news articles. Class time will be a blend of lecture, discussion, and group work which, along with student products such as quizzes and independent writings, is intended to develop an appreciation for the biological foundations of these topics. Two 75 minute classes.

    Students should choose between two sections of the course: **Sections -01 and -02.

    **Section-01. This section meets twice weekly for 75 minutes. Limited to 30 students.

    **Section-02. This section is identical to section-01 but adds a special 4th credit for to the course that provides a community-based learning opportunity to participate in science education. Student groups will work with D.C. elementary school children. Students will design and implement an educational curriculum focusing on topics related to the course. We will meet for a weekly strategy session and roughly two hours of school involvement weekly. Limited to 10 students.

    This course is appropriate as a core course for completion of the math/science requirement of the College. It is not open to Biology majors or minors.

    Credits: 3/ 4 with the community-based learning opportunity
