BIOL-194 Gateway: Biology of Global Health

This course will serve as an introduction to the Biology of Global Health major. The course will cover two different “case studies” in which a health topic will be explored from a number of different angles, especially the science, but also including policy, ethics, law, economics, etc. Case studies will vary from year to year, but topics may include infectious disease, heritable disease, environmental effects on disease, and the like. Students will be expected to participate actively in ongoing class discussions and group work. By the end of each case study, each student will have produced a significant paper relating to the topic at hand accompanied by periodic presentations to the class. Each student will also take part in an oral exam at the end of each case study. 4 credits including 3 classroom hours and 3 laboratory hours.

Prerequisites: BIOL-103, BIOL-104, and BIOL-152 or permission of instructor
