BIOL-364 Microbiology

BIOL-364 Microbiology
Spring only
Josh Anzinger
This course will explore the diversity of the microbe world, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists, and viruses. We will examine the range of interactions observed between microbes and their environments, with a particular emphasis on human-microbe associations. The four major sections of the course will focus on: (1) the evolution of microbial diversity; (2) unique aspects of microbe biochemistry relevant to microbial lifestyles; (3) infectious diseases of animals and plants; and (4) the role of microbes in the environment. Three double-periods per week will emphasize discussion of a diversity of reading material. Laboratory investigations will be designed and conducted by students, under the direction of Profs. Elmendorf and Hickey. Prerequisites: BIOL-103 and -104.
