BIOL-262 Shaping National Science Policy
Spring for 2016-2017
This seminar introduces students to science advocacy. It begins with introductory discussions of the political system. Then, it transitions into hardball politics with guest-hosted lectures from congressional science staff, science journalists, and science lobbyists. The seminar concludes with an examination of five case studies in science advocacy. Students work on one project throughout the semester. They break into teams, identify a politically relevant science issue of their own choosing, develop an advocacy strategy, and then take their issue to Congress. The seminar is three credits. Students majoring in Biology count one credit towards their major; students majoring in Biology of Global Health may count this class towards the Interdisciplinary Perspectives requirement, and students majoring in Environmental Biology count this class as an upper division elective course. Physics students count the class as an elective towards a degree.
