BIST-520-01 Special Topic: Meta-Analysis
Fall only
In this course, statistical methods in meta-analysis will be described in detail, from their theoretical development though to practical implementation. The methods will be covered in sufficient detail to enable students apply them in practice. The topics to be covered include combining independent significance tests; measures of effect sizes for continuous, dichotomous and ordinal data; fixed and random effects methods for combining effect sizes; dealing with heterogeneity; methods for meta-regression; methods for publication bias; and steps in conducting a meta-analysis.
Recommended Textbook (not required): Sutton AJ, Abrams KR, Jones DR, Sheldon TA, Song F (2000). Methods for meta-analysis in medical research. Wiley: Chichester, New York.
This course will run from 9/2 - 10/5/2009 (every Monday/Wednesday) Course meets in Building D Room 301.
Credits: 1
Prerequisites: Basic courses in statistics and epidemiology or research methods such as BIST 501.
