CLSL-102 Latin Poetry
Spring for 2013-2014
Faculty:
An introduction to Latin poetry for students who have completed the
intermediate level in the language. Students read selections from the second half of Vergil’s /Aeneid/, focusing on the stories of the young Trojans and Italians who die in the wars of their fathers. While these tales introduce important themes of the poem, the class primarily aims to teach students how to read and translate Latin verse. There will be special emphasis on learning the idiosyncrasies of poetic language and mastering Vergil’s meter, the dactylic hexameter. Credits: 3
