In this course, we will read substantial portions of Petronius’ Satyricon, which recounts the exploits of the lovers Encolpius and Giton. We will explore such issues as the novel’s relationship to other literary forms, the representation of imperial extravagance and excess, the innovative prosimetric language; we will supplement our investigations with reading from contemporary scholarship.
