The course analyzes the interaction between economic history and the
development of the economics discipline in the first half, discussing Smith and the classical school, Keynes and his critics, and the future of capitalism as seen by Marx and Schumpeter. The second half is a brief history of the Soviet experiment with central planning and issues associated with globalization. China and Japan are also discussed as case studies.
