ENGL 287 Seminar: Issues in Cultural Studies
In the first half, to familiarize ourselves with the new science of Cultural Studies as practiced in the US and UK today by reading canonical and newer works in the "tradition." We will see that Cultural Studies emphasizes the interlocking categories of class, race, gender, nation and sexuality to produce a "cultural ensemble of power." The special emphasis of the second half will be to examine what practical difference we can make in society by practicing culture. Our readings will be geared to the evolving contours of Georgetown's Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Practice, especially its annual Spring Symposium and Festival. The special guest of this year's Symposium will be novelist and literacy activist Dave Eggers, bestselling author of /A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius /and screen writer for "Where the Wild Things Are."
Requirements: 2 short papers, oral presentation, collaborative group research project.
