FREN-102 Advanced French II
A general survey of French civilization is integrated with continued work on mastery of all requisite language skills. Readings and compositions focus on material from the French media. The three hours of class instruction are supplemented by a required one-hour conversation section each week.

FREN-102-70 Advanced French II: Contemporary Civilization
This course is a continuation of Advanced I but qualified students who have not taken Advanced I at SFS/Q may be enrolled with permission of the instructor. This course prepares students for gateway and upper-division courses in French. Students will work on improving their oral and writing skills in French through a review of grammar, intensive writing, a study of vocabulary and idioms through magazines and TV news program, as well as the close reading of an integralnovel. They will also gain insights into contemporary issues concerning the French speaking world through a regular reading of the Francophone weekly L’Express, Le Point, Le Nouvel Observateur and Jeune Afrique, watching the boroadcated news on France 2, and reading Amin Maalouf’s novel Léon l’Africain in its integrality. Classes will emphasize oral communication by means of oral presentations, debates and discussions. Written grammatical exercises and essays will also contribute to develop a wider and a more precise ability to write in French.
