FREN-431 Anthropology of French Food
Spring for 2016-2017
This course enables students to become conversant with important theory on class structures, social reproduction, colonialism and post-colonialism in contemporary France, understood to encompass overseas territories and ex-colonies. These themes include the interplay between language, culture, and nation; the nature and reproduction of class relations; immigration, ethnicity, and race; human rights and the law. Several examples will be studied in depth: 1) the rise of diasporic youth vernaculars and cultural forms 2) the passage of the controversial 2004 law banning religious symbols in state institutions 3) language and culture issues in the postcolony 4) illegal immigration and the humanitarian exception 5) youth crime, the juvenile justice system, and the 2005 riots.
Prerequisites: FREN 250 and FREN 251, or instructor's permission
