FREN-464 Images and Readings of Asia in French Literature
Faculty:
  • Laude, Patrick
  • The Asian world: exotic dream or quest for reality? Such is the basic question we will raise and ponder through reading and discussion of a treasury of texts, from seventeenth century travels to India to literary longings for Japan and Indochina in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Self versus the other, identity versus diversity, exoticism, and colonial reality. Cross-listed with the Comparative Literature program. This course fulfills the upper-division post-1800 literature requirement for the French major.
