The course investigates stories of crime, mystery, and madness in 19th and 20th century German literature as manifestations of the increasingly complex situation of the individual in society and as expressions of the search for historical truth and social justice. It explores how German artists have used the medium of crime fiction/novellas/drama/film to either assert or question shared moral values by showing that which is evil, mysterious, mad, or even criminal.
