GERM-440 Early Germanic Christian Epic (upper/under)

The purpose of this course is to explore the confluence of Germanic and Christian poetry and art in the early stages of their meeting,; and to study the mutual, varied, and beautiful results of their blending. Both Germanic myth and Christian Gospel story will be examined in the form in which they exist and co-exist in the works and artifacts studied – such as: Yggdrasil and the Cross; the Last Judgment and the Day of Doom; warrior loyalty and faith in Christ; sacrifice and chivalry. The concentration in the course will be on the three epic texts, but the overall focus on the era of conversion and confluence in the North is broad enough to include both culturally related poetry, Anglo-Saxon , Saxon and High German, as well as the blend of poetry in artifacts such as the stave church, drinking halls, burial rituals, and even Christmas customs – all of which were affected in some way, some were even created, by the poetic realizations of the emerging Germanic-Christian form of faith.
