GERM-504 Nineteenth-Century Literature
Fall only
This graduate-level reading course familiarizes students with major aspects 19th century German literature and major literary periods such as late Romanticism, Young Germany, Biedermeier, Realism, Naturalism, and Symbolism.
Students will read short prose, dramas, and poetry and write brief analyses of characteristic aesthetic features of the works.
Authors studied will include Tieck (Der gestiefelte Kater), Eichendorff (Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts), Hoffmann (Rat Krespel), Kleist (Das Erdbeben von Chili), Heine (Deutschland, ein Wintermärchen), Büchner (Lenz), Droste-Hülshoff (Die Judenbuche), Hebbel (Agnes Bernauer), Nestroy (Lumpazivagabundus), Keller (Das Fähnlein der sieben Aufrechten), Meyer (Der Schuss von der Kanzel), Ebner-Eschenbach (Komtesse Muschi, Komtesse Paula, Die Hand lasst er küssen), Raabe (Else von der Tanne), Stifter (Granit), Fontane (Stine), Storm (Immensee, Viola Tricolor), Hauptmann (Bahnwärter Thiel), Hofmannsthal (Das Märchen der 672. Nacht), and a generous selection of poetry. In addition, we will read a small selection of literary/aesthetic essays by authors that will help us establish a context for our discussions. Students will also need to read one longer novel of their choice.
