GOVT-405 Dept Sem: Genocide/Justice/Reconciliation
Offered academic year 2010-2011
The main goal of Genocide, Justice, and Reconciliation is to introduce students to the theory and practice of post-conflict justice and reconciliation models including truth commissions, war crimes tribunals, reparations, and related responses to genocide, crimes against humanity, and other mass atrocities.
In furtherance of this goal, students will conduct a semester-long debate on how to adequately deal with the past in newly democratizing countries, exploring the relative benefits of “forgetting” or “remembering” gross violations of human rights.
Through the readings, class discussions and course assignments, students will gain an understanding of the constraints on legal theory and practice in the context of the creation of a culture of human rights in post-conflict countries.
