GOVT-589 Advanced Conflict Resolution Skills
Spring only
In order to pursue a career in conflict resolution, whether as a researcher, scholar or practitioner, a strong foundation in conflict resolution skills and processes such as dialogue, cooperative problem solving, cross-sectoral conflict mainstreaming, and designing conflict management systems is necessary. In addition, individuals need solid understanding of project management skills including proposal writing, program design and policy writing to remain competitive in the job market and to conduct effective work. Although employers seek individuals with conflict resolution skills, research has shown many organizations place a premium on candidates possessing project management skills.
This course will provide students with an overview and practical experience in advanced conflict resolution and general project management skills relevant to the evolving job market. The course is focused on practical and experiential learning through exercises, simulations, case studies, guest lectures and discussions. Throughout the semester, students will be encouraged to develop their skills as reflective practitioners. The course will also include a component on career development and strategies to effectively market conflict resolution experience.
