GOVT-450 Democratic Consolidation: In Latin America

GOVT-450 Democratic Consolidation: In Latin America
Faculty:
  • Bailey, John
  • The central drama of Latin America and the Caribbean is the dual transition toward market economies and liberal democracy. The course focuses on themes of political culture, civil society, institutions and policy-making processes, and policy issues as these relate to the consolidation and quality of democracy in that region. Some emphasis will be placed on the larger countries, but we go where the good literature takes us. We shall use a seminar-discussion format in a collective search and evaluation of the relevant literature. The course requirements will remain fixed, but the topics and readings will be revised and expanded during the semester to reflect the findings of our collective search.
