HIST-111 Africa I
Fall only
The course has three major objectives. The first objective is to explore interactions between Africans at local, regional, and international levels. The second is to understand dynamics that shaped these interactions, and how Africans modified their lives in response to social, cultural, economic, and ecological implications of these interactions. Our underlying aim, in this case, is to challenge the common perceptions of Africans as all the same and at the same time “tribally” divided. Here we will capture the shared histories and explore unique experiences of different African peoples. The third is to allow you to begin to engage with historical sources and approaches that historians have used in their efforts to understand Africa’s earlier pasts.
This course meets the general education requirement in History for College students when taken in combination with a LATE introductory-level history course (HIST 002, 006, or 034).
