HIST-398 American Foreign Policy in the Age of Jefferson
Spring only
Faculty:
  • Kaplan, Lawrence
  • This colloquium will center on the problems of American diplomacy from the American Revolution to the Monroe Doctrine. The primary theme will be the efforts of the new republic to free itself from the political control of France and the economic control of Britain. The impact of the Wars of the French Revolution and Napoleon on American foreign policy will be the major issue from 1793 to 1814. The successful disentanglement from Europe after 1814 will be contrasted with the entanglements of the Confederation.
