INAF-360 Peacemaking and Peacekeeping: A Middle Power Perspective

INAF-360 Peacemaking and Peacekeeping: A Middle Power Perspective
Fall only
Faculty:
  • Tidwell, Alan
  • Middle powers play an important role in peacemaking and peacekeeping. Great powers (US, Japan, PRC and Russia) often have large political and economic interests in a given conflict. While great powers possess considerable leverage that can be useful in moving conflicting parties toward peaceful settlement, they are also constrained by their great power status. Unlike great powers middle powers are perceived to have less at stake in any given conflict. Middle power may not possess the same capacity to leverage the parties in a given conflict, yet there are often perceived as being neutral and less inclined to want to settle a conflict "their way". Middle powers can bring unique and often inventive approaches to the problem of violent conflict. This course will examine the dynamics of middle power involvement in peacemaking and peacekeeping. Examples of middle powers playing this role include Australia in East Timor and Papua New Guinea, Norway in Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
