INAF-426-01 Al Farabi and Medieval Islamic Philosophy
Spring only
Alfarabi writes about many subjects, but especially about human
happiness. He equates it with human perfection and hints in different
writings as to how it might be acquired. But he has provided a path of
sorts: begin with logic, then move through the sciences to metaphysics.
Thanks to recent scholarship, access to his key works on this teaching
are now available in English. Now, then, it seems appropriate to take
up the challenge and figure out, among other things, what Alfarabi means
when he claims that “the idea of the philosopher, first ruler, king,
lawgiver, and imam is but a single idea”, this being one stopping
place along the path to happiness.
