INAF-513 The War of Ideas Seminar: Implications of Policy and Public Diplomacy in the Long War

INAF-513 The War of Ideas Seminar: Implications of Policy and Public Diplomacy in the Long War
Spring only
Lajeunesse, G, Wunderle, W
The National Security Strategy and National Defense Strategy assess that
the United States is engaged in what has been termed "The Long War"—what
is foreseen as a generational struggle against international terrorism.
A key component of this struggle is countering the influence of
ideological extremism that inspires terrorism.

This course will provide students an opportunity to think through the
competing doctrines espoused by Western thinkers and radical Islamists.
Students will read key documents written by Ali al-Khomeini and Sayid
Qutb, al-Qa’ida ideologues such as Usama Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri,
in addition to democratic thinkers that have inspired US policy thus far
to include Natan Sharanski, President Bush, and Condoleezza Rice.

Seminar participants will come to appreciate the intersection of policy
and public diplomacy through a series of policy exercises, and will also
complete a final paper or project.
