Microfinance is usually viewed as a development success in that it has demonstrated the capacity to improve standards of living among the world’s poorest in a sustainable way. Microfinance development programs target their financial services to low-income micro entrepreneurs with fewer than 10 employees. The purpose of this class is to provide an introduction to best practices in the design, management, and evaluation of microfinance programs. At the end of the course, students will be able to describe the role of microfinance in the financial services sector; the profile of the average microfinance client; the range of providers of microfinance services; the role of government in developing microfinance; and the principles of microfinance performance management.
