THEO-072 Religion/Ethics/International Relations

THEO-072 Religion/Ethics/International Relations
Fall only
Four case studies in the intersection of ethical concerns and international politics are reviewed to uncover and apply the relevant ethical principles. The cases are: the atomic bombing of Hiroshima; the uneven ledger of collaboration and resistance to the Nazi effort to eliminate the Jews of Europe; the war in Vietnam, a memory "that haunts us still"; and the unfolding horror of war in the Balkans. The methodology combines close reading and discussion of the texts with viewing of documentaries on these events. Ethical models utilized are the natural law and just war theories found in the philosophy and law of armed conflict.
