This course explores the history of ethical and religious thought in Classical China, from the 12th century B.C.E. through the unification of China in 221 B.C.E., with special attention given to the views presented in texts from the Confucian, Mohist, Daoist, and Legalist schools. The course concentrates on the theories of human nature that were associated with these early Chinese thinkers and the ways in which these theories served as the foundation for their ethical, religious, and political views. We will also examine their influence on later Chinese thought, and explore the contributions they might make to contemporary religious and ethical discussions.
