THEO-190 Approaches to the Bible

THEO-190 Approaches to the Bible
Fall only
Faculty:
  • Linafelt, Tod
  • The Bible has played many and various roles in the last two millennia, depending on how it is interpreted and how its contents are applied to life. Among these many approaches, a few can be listed. The Bible has been taken as Scripture, guiding the lives of individuals and communities as their norm for faith and morals; as a source for understanding of history and, sometimes, of information about the future of the world; as a cultural and historical artifact appreciated for its literary power; as a source of cultural reference common to Western civilization; and, in recent centuries, as the object of scholarly, scientific inquiry with the aid of various methodologies.
