TPST-345 Race, Gender & Performance Seminar

What do we mean when we speak of "race" and "gender," and how can performance give us a lens through which to understand these terms? This upper level interdisciplinary course approaches performance as an object of study, a method of research, and a mode of analysis that can help to highlight and, possibly, to transform race and gender dynamics in the United States. Throughout the semester, we will read and view plays, performance art experiments, dance pieces, films, political protests, and community-based arts projects from diverse cultural traditions in America in order to examine how performance has served as a tool of racism and (hetero)sexism and also as a means by which to resist their effects.Cross listed with WG Studies,English, Comp lit and American Studies.
Thursday film viewing lab is recommended but not required and meets at faculty discretion. Prereq. jr/sr status.

Prerequisites: Junior/Senior with priority to TPST majors/minors
