Spring only
Robert Patterson
In this course, we will read several texts, both primary and secondary, that
are essential to the study of African American life and culture in the

are central to the field of African American Studies, we will examine
African American culture through historical, literary, sociological,
psychological, and philosophical lenses. Additionally, we will consider the
formation of African American Studies as an academic discipline during the
late 1960s, paying particular attention to how the social transformation
during this time period aided in the formation of this discipline.
