The notion of fame has deep historical roots, but "celebrity" is a relatively recent phenomenon that has emerged through the technological innovations of the last 150 years. This course will examine celebrity as media spectacle, celebrity as a process in which every production waits to be eclipsed by the next production. Drawing from several disciplines, we will attempt to understand American celebrity as a product of the cult of the individual and as an integral feature of advanced capitalism. Case studies will range from the marketing of child star Shirley Temple to the trial of O.J. Simpson.
