ANTH-210 Indigenous Art: Rights and Representation

Indigenous art expresses many political views including those on human rights and cultural representation. This course explores examples of this art from the Pacific region and North America. Examples range from early colonial illustrations of Indigenous peoples to woodcarvings and fiber arts made for the tourism industry in the 20th century produced by Indigenous people themselves. It also discusses very recent artwork by Indigenous artists 'speaking' on global issues such environmental sustainability and pays particular attention to the film industry and its representations of Indigenous people.
