ARTM-101-10 Co-Curricular Concert Choir

The GU Concert Choir is Georgetown University’s premiere large, vocal performance ensemble. It represents Georgetown University internationally, nationally, in the DC region. The ensemble rehearses
and performs a broad variety of literature including traditional sacred choral works, choral/orchestral masterworks, traditional works from non-western vocal traditions, avant-garde, and alternative classical works. This course provides intensive training in sight-singing, music notation, advanced performance techniques, and vocal improvisation. Credits: 0

ARTM-101-20 Co-Curricular Chamber Singers

The Chamber Singers is a select, auditioned, classically-styled ensemble specializing in the study and performance of a cappella music ranging from the 15th to 21st centuries. Music is chosen each semester to reflect a central thematic element that helps the group to focus both its academic study and musical performance. The Chamber Singers have had the opportunity to perform extensively throughout the Washington area and the east coast, including performances for former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Gore.

ARTM-101-30 Co-Curricular Chapel Choir

The Georgetown University Chapel Choir, composed of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, sings weekly for the 5:00 p.m. Sunday Liturgy in Dahlgren Chapel and rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:00. The choir also offers special musical events throughout the semester such as Lessons and Carols and Vespers. A variety of SATB repertoire ranging from traditional chant to contemporary music is performed. Basic vocal skills such as pronunciation, intonation, and breathing techniques will be taught and basic musical skills such as rhythm and sight-reading will be developed. Auditions are held at the beginning of each semester.

The Georgetown Orchestra plays music from the 18th, 19th and 20th century. The orchestra performs several times a year, but in at least one large concert per semester.

ARTM-101-50 Co-Curricular Wind Ensemble

This course will expose participants to both standard and new repertoire for Concert Band. This includes music from the Baroque to the present. The ensemble will rehearse and sight read as much music as time permits throughout the semester in addition to preparing for public concerts, generally one concert per semester.

ARTM-101-60 Co-Curricular GU Jazz: Jazz Ensemble

Georgetown Jazz is an 18-piece jazz ensemble dedicated to promoting the American art of jazz. The focus is primarily on the historical big band sounds of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton and other great bands from the 1930s to the present. We also perform some contemporary arrangements and our own versions of classic tunes. All participants will develop some level skill with jazz improvisation. Georgetown Jazz performs in and around the Washington DC area, and at many university functions. Next year's guest artists will include Dave Brubeck. Some smaller combos will also be formed.

ARTM-101-80 Co-Curricular Intro to Afro-Cuban Drumming and Percussion

This course will open the door to the world of clave-based rhythms and their application to the family of Afro-Cuban instruments. Topics covered will include: conga/bongo technique, timbale technique, bell patterns, explanation of clave and its relation to the music structures and Chekere/maracas technique. Ensemble playing. ARTM-101-90 Co-Curricular Pep Band
Faculty:
The Pep Band performs at Men's Football and Basketball home games and the Women's basketball home games. The band performs current rock, pop, and hip-hop tunes of today providing excitement and a major cheering section to pump up the crowd and the team. The conductor chooses the appropriate music with help from students, integrating new cheers and rehearsing the band to be prepared at a moment's notice.
