CCTP-675-01 Communities of Practice
Fall only
This course will explore Communities of Practice (CoP) from both a theoretical
and a practical perspective. Theory will cover the structural elements of a CoP (defining a community identity, scoping the domain, defining practice), the natural lifecycle of, and best practices for cultivating communities. On the practical side, we?ll explore how technologies (both Web 2.0 and Web 3.0) can enable communities throughout their lifecycles. The majority of the course, though, will be focused on examining real communities of practice in a variety of domains, such as education, health care and nursing, disaster management, open source software engineering, hobbies/crafts, substance abuse, and others of interest to students.
The course will feature speakers who are involved in various CoPs. Students will be involved in a class project to analyze the emergence and role of communities of practice in the response to the 2004 Tsunami in Indonesia.
