CCTP-692 Privacy Rights in the Communications Revolution

This course will review and analyze the current state of "Privacy Rights in the Communications Revolution." The law in the United States (and in other countries) generally recognizes a "zone of privacy" for individuals in society. However, with technological advances, there is an increasing tension between public information and privacy for individuals. In the course, topics to be covered in depth will include: overview of existing privacy law and expectations; existing regimes for balancing public policy and personal privacy interests; privacy in the context of public safety and national security; commercialization of privacy protections; commercial inroads of personal privacy; protecting vulnerable populations; public figures and privacy; and privacy in the workplace. The course grade is based on class participation and a final paper.
