CCTP-717-01 Social Network Analysis II
Fall for 2017-2018

This course will allow students to further develop their knowledge base and engage in more expansive research upon completion of the Introduction to Social Network Analysis Course.

Students will complete two fifteen minute article presentations along with a research based final project.

Three key topics will guide this course:

1. Defining the 'system' and exploring the tension between individual agency and social structure, drawing extensively from psychology and sociology including the work of Milgram.

2. Modeling systems and further exploring group structure, such as k-cores, k-plexes and additional network measures. An introduction to complexity science through further use of Netlogo software and the principles of agent based modeling.

3. Information diffusion, social contagion, and the search for network patterns that act as significant predictors.

This class is designed for students who have completed the Introduction to Social Network Analysis (CCTP-696) and hope to engage in further research in a lecture / student seminar atmosphere.

Readings will include additional work with Analyzing Social Media Networks with NodeXL (Hansen), the papers of Kathleen Carley and primary text Networks, Crowds and Markets (Easley).
