Critical study of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and its subversion of authorities--narrative, generic, political, ecclesiastical, and cultural. There will be attention given to medieval cultural contexts, including Gothic art, iconography, medieval astrology and other occult sciences, Ricardian government, anticlericalism, Boethian philosophy, courtly love, antifeminism, and social symbolism. The Tales will be read in Middle English; no previous knowledge of the language is required. Fall.
