ENGL-180 18th and 19th Century Travel Narratives

In this class, we will read some fictional and non-fictional travel narratives from 18th- and 19th-century British and American literature. Thematically, we will be interested in the construction of ideas of civilization and savagery; the working out of the dynamics of submission, agency, and power; the use of travel and "the other" to define various kinds of identity.
