ENGL-182-01 Dickens
Spring only
ENGL 182-01 Dickens and the Art of Fiction. Course Description. 2010.

A close reading of three major novels by Charles Dickens: Little Dorrit (1855 – 1857), A Tale of Two Cities (1859), and Great Expectations (1860 – 1861) in which we will consider the writer in the context of his era and the practice of fiction in the mid-nineteenth century. Discussion will dominate class time with students reporting on their analytical, inventive, and library research projects. There will not be any exams as such, but there will be short, factual quizzes on the day’s reading which will begin each class session. The semester ends with a slightly longer essay which discusses a specific aspect of all three novels.
