ENGL-211 History and Memory in Modern America

Readings and discussions in this seminar will focus on the ways in which the past is interpreted, ordered, and memorialized, in texts as well as in archives and collections of material objects. Readings in primary and secondary sources will help us to consider the relationship between personal and public memory, the ways of narrativizing memory, the interplay between history and memory, and the function of artifacts and displays in shaping and preserving a public memory.
