    • This course examines the rich heritage and contemporary practices of nonfiction filmmaking. Our work will be divided into three units of approximately equal length. We begin with a general introduction to the cinematic, social and ethical issues raised by nonfiction film. We’ll examine the different choices available to filmmakers who seek to represent reality and consider the implications of such choices. Our second unit will survey the history of documentary film focusing on several historical traditions of nonfiction film in light of their cultural contexts. Our third and final unit will explore some contemporary nonfiction filmmakers in light of the practical and theoretical issues they face as cinema shifts from analog to digital technology. This course has both an attendance policy and required Wednesday evening film screenings.
