ENGL-332-01 Lannan Chair Seminar: The Writer and Human Rights

This seminar will address the convergence of literary art and human rights and with the ways writers and poets have responded to human rights issues in their work. We will read novels, memoirs, short stories, essays and poetry, including works by Dave Eggers, who will visit us in the spring for the Lannan Symposium. Others may include Manlio Argueta, J.M.Coetzee, Michael Ondaatje, Nawal el-Saadawi, Susan Sontag, Wallace Shawn, Philip Gourevitch, Semezdin Mehmedinovic, Edwidge Danticat, U Sam Oeur, Nadine Gordimer and others. We will also be writing a literary work in response to issues of concern to us. This project, whether a short story, a collection of poetry or a play will constitute a major part of the course work.
