WRITING ABOUT THE ARTS

The world of arts, culture and entertainment will be explored through intensive weekly assignments writing for a mass media audience. Students will write feature and news stories as well as critical opinion pieces and reviews across many artistic disciplines. Regular newspaper and magazine reading will be required. Students should have an interest in the arts as well as in writing, though training in the arts is not required. Completion of Intro to Journalism and/or Media Techniques is suggested.

Online News Writing and Production

This course is intended to give students a firm grasp of the skills necessary to produce online news content as well as an understanding of the forces that are driving the rapidly changing and diversifying online news industry. Students will receive a mixture of practical instruction in online news writing, multimedia news production, search engine optimization techniques, blog posting and social media management. Students will also be expected to engage in critical analysis of the journalism profession, contemporary online journalism and the economic, social and technological drivers shaping online news consumption. Assignments will include individual news stories and multimedia elements. Students will also be asked to contribute to a class news blog and other group projects.
