Fall 2009
This elective is for students who will be participating in an internship at a local media outlet (print, broadcast or Internet) during the summer or fall. This workshop-style course will give students an opportunity to advance their reporting and writing skills while sharing their internship experiences with other students engaged in similar journalistic pursuits. Written assignments will include a semester-long journal, two reported articles, and a final project that directly grows out of the internship experience. Students will have the opportunity to post their stories on a GU journalism web site. Required readings will focus on issues common to any journalistic endeavor such as ethics and fairness and the future of the profession in the new media era. Guest speakers will include prominent local journalists. Students must arrange the internship before enrolling in the course.

Spring 2010
Professor Barbara Feinman Todd
This elective is for students who will be participating in an internship at a local media outlet (print, broadcast or Internet) during the spring. An alternative to the traditional one-on-one tutorial, this workshop-style course will give students an opportunity to share their experiences with other students engaged in similar journalistic pursuits. Written assignments will include a semester-long journal and ongoing occasional short pieces. Students will have the opportunity, if they would like, to post their stories on a GU journalism web site. There will also be required readings about issues that are common to any journalistic endeavor such as ethics and fairness. Students must arrange the internship by January 1, 2010 and contact the instructor by then, preferably before the winter break. Students are strongly encouraged to have completed “Introduction to Journalism” before taking this class. (Barbara Feinman Todd, the English Department’s Journalism Director, has worked as an investigative researcher, a freelance reporter, a ghostwriter and a newsroom writing coach.) Permission of instructor is mandatory. Please contact Professor Feinman Todd at feinmanb@georgetown.edu
