ENGL-483-01 Issues in Education
Spring only
This course is intended primarily for students in the Georgetown University Catholic Schools Project who wish to continue in their placement during the second semester, though other students who have worked actively in education can add in with the Instructor's permission. It assumes, however, a good knowledge of teaching strategies and a reasonable amount of practice in executing them, and considers such topics as the role of standardized tests, the place of whole language and of phonics, and the impact and meanings of inner-city Catholic primary education, among other topics. It requires, among other things, an extended research paper on an educational topic agreed to in consultation with the instructor, and researched in Washington libraries other than our own.
