GBUS-449 Hedge Funds & Alternative Investments
Fall for 2017-2018
Spring for 2017-2018
This is an introduction to the main ‘alternative investments’ available to professional managers at pension plans, insurance companies, endowments, foundations, and major investment banks. The course will analyze hedge funds, funds of hedge funds, private equity, commodities, foreign exchange, real property, and structured products in order to evaluate each asset class for inclusion in a typical institutional portfolio. Focus will be placed on understanding the benefits and risks of each category from an investor’s perspective, rather than on structuring specific transactions or developing products. The course is appropriate for students interested in careers in investment management, investment banking, wealth management, and government policy & regulation. The course will conclude with a professional certification from CAIA covering the Fundamentals of Alternative Investments that can be incorporated in students’ resumes. The course assumes a foundation in investments, statistics, and accounting. While the course will not have formal requirements, it is highly recommended for students to have taken GBUS 400 along with any one of MATH 040, MATH 140, ECON 121, or equivalent. Background in investments can be demonstrated through investment clubs, on-line courses, and/or personal experience.
