GERM-380 Culture Wars - Media: Austrian, German, Swiss

GERM-380 Culture Wars - Media: Austrian, German, Swiss
Faculty:
  • Fink, Stefan
  • Using written and spoken samples from the media scene (print media, radio, TV, Internet) of German-speaking countries, this course looks at the informative versus persuasive and manipulative use of language and images. Discussions will focus on issues such as: the persuasive power of language and pictorial images in advertisement, political propaganda (past and present) in a cross-cultural context, scientific knowledge transfer (Fachsprachen), "language imports" from other languages, especially from American English, gender and cultural stereotyping, and journalistic standards in the electronic media. Guest lectures by Washington-based German (Austrian, Swiss) media representatives and a visit to the Newseum complement the course.
