GERM-707 German-Polish Border Regions
Fall for 2013-2014
This graduate level course explores how the volatile history of German-Polish relations -- culminating in WWII, the redrawing of the borders, and the ensuing massive population transfers -- plays out in literature and film in the second half of the 20th century and how, since the end of the Cold War, a new generation of writers and film makers address the legacies of multi-ethnic regions in the context of contemporary Europe.

The following overarching topics, public debates, and discourses will be considered in the context of the literary texts and films discussed in the course:

• History of contested German-Polish border regions

• Changing literary and public discourses on “Flucht und Vertreibung”

• Debates on the role of German victims in the context of WWII

• Legacies of multi-ethnic regions in the context of a new (post-cold War) Europe

• Trans-disciplinary discourses on space & the role of space in literature
