GOVT-222 Transitions to Democracy

GOVT-222 Transitions to Democracy
Spring only
This course explores democracy and democratization with a dual focus. It looks first at the various conceptual dimensions of transition and consolidation processes, such as the importance of prerequisites, the roles of the working classes and elites, debates over civil society and political culture, international causes and consequences and economic forces. The second section applies these theories and concepts to individual cases, including postwar Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain and Argentina.

This course counts for the Comparative Government distribution requirement.
