This class deals with the political, cultural, economic and other societal aspects of Israeli life.
At 60 Israel is one of the most vibrant democratic societies in the world. This class will evaluate the challenges Israel is facing in the geopolitical level as well as internally. We will deal with issues of ethnicity, shifts to capitalism, the Arab minority, the US-Israeli alliance, the Jewish dimension of the state, the role of memory as well as with Secular-Religious tensions. We will also the complex and unstable political system, and the conflict between the judiciary and the politicians. The fact that Israel is a hub of science, technology, and the arts, will also be examined in light of the cultural interaction with other Middle East cultures.
